Cruz

I’ve been shot, stabbed, and hit by a car.

None of those hurt as much as watching Emilia rise up to kiss Dias. Each of their touches was a lash on my back. They were far enough away that I didn’t have to hide my reactions. Then I caught Derek’s grimace and knew I wasn’t the only one suffering.

I had no right.

Neither did he.

She was doing her job painfully well.

Dias was falling for her just as quickly as I was.

And Derek.

And Javier and Marco.

Fuck.

We knew the rules going into this. We knew she was off limits in every way. She was a pack princess. Sure, she wasn’t a blushing breeder like most women, but she was valuable to the Alpha. He knew her. He gave her orders.

She was a star, and we were so far on the outskirts of the Pack that one of his lower-level men was in charge of our communication. The four of us were nothing compared to her.

Plus, she was here to seduce another man. Her entire purpose was to get him to fall for her, trust her, and bring her into his world.

Of course, she was going to touch and kiss him.

She would do more, too.

The thought made me physically ill.

Him touching her. Taking her.

She didn’t belong with someone like him either.

None of us deserved Emilia’s fire and spirit. She didn’t belong in our world or in this twisted mess.

“You shouldn’t have said anything,” Derek spoke calmly as we cruised back up the harbor toward our home.

“I know.”

“She’s doing her job.”

“I know,” I growled.

“She doesn’t owe you, or anyone, anything.”

I balled my fists. “I fucking know.”

“You’re not the only one with feelings for her.”

I knew that too, but his statement of fact felt more like a confession. Did he really think I hadn’t noticed how he looked at her? How all of us did?

“I know I can’t have her, that none of us can. I know I shouldn’t have said anything to her, and that she doesn’t belong to any of us, but that doesn’t stop how much it fucking sucks.”

He put his hand on my shoulder. “It really does.”

We stood like that until the docks loomed closer and it was my turn to be a crew member again.

“Fuck,” Derek grunted. “I’m going to warn Emilia.”

I gathered the rope, glanced up, and then glared behind my sunglasses. The Italian prick stood on the pier with his hands shoved into black slacks. His greasy black hair didn’t move in the strong ocean breeze even though his black polo rippled against his body.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t say anything to him. Not only did I want to avoid his attention in the remote chance he recognized me from the gala, but I wasn’t supposed to be anyone to Emilia right now. Or ever.

I tossed the rope to one of the waiting dock hands as the yacht went silent. He and one of his coworkers pulled us in.

Emilia passed me, and I offered my hand to steady her down the steps.
